Henry Payne: Ford kit boosts horsepower for F-150, Mustang V-8s

Ford Motor Co. is supercharging its F-150 and Mustang offerings for customers.

The Blue Oval joined the aftermarket horsepower wars this week by offering a factory-installed Whipple Supercharger Kit for purchase with a new pickup or muscle car.

That means a whopping power boost for the F-150’s 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 engine from 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque to a howling 700 horses and 590 pound-feet of torque. The earth-pawing, 480-horse/415-torque Mustang GT and 500-horsepower/418-torque Dark Horse 5.0-liter V-8s get even bigger gains — to 800 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque. For context, that’s more ponies than the last-generation, supercharged, 760-horsepower, 5.2-liter Predator engine in the Shelby GT-500 track beast and rivals the top-drawer, 815-horsepower Mustang GTD supercar.

Some auto analysts suggested Ford’s jump into the aftermarket space dovetailed with the federal government lifting of emissions penalties for automakers who make high-performance V-8 engines.

"This is 49-state emissions compliant for 2026 model year F-150 and Mustang models equipped with the 5.0-liter V-8," said Ford Truck Communications Manager Dawn McKenzie. The Supercharger Kit can be ordered on 2024 and 2025 F-150s/Mustangs and is a new, turn-key installation for 2026 models except in California (2024-2025 conversions are 50-state compliant).

Brands like Ford and Dodge faced massive fines under previous EPA/California mandates aimed at killing off internal combustion engines. Ford gained federal credits by building EVs like the F-150 Lightning as it maintained V-8 production, while Stellantis brands Dodge and Ram eliminated V-8s.

Aftermarket installers of performance parts like superchargers, on the other hand, faced no equivalent penalties. Since the Environmental Protection Agency and Congress lifted regulations last year, Dodge and Ram have quickly resuscitated their V8-powered 1500 pickup and supercharged, 777-horse Ram TRX, with a Dodge Charger V-8 on the way.

“Ford’s move is reflective of where the market potential is,” said senior auto analyst and performance enthusiast Karl Brauer of iSeeCars.com. “Buyers have shown their interest in V-8 engines, and now — absent greenhouse-gas penalties — automakers are eager to own that demand and supply the market.”

Like Ford’s original equipment engine, the supercharger comes with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty when installed by a Ford dealer (via the Fox Factory Vehicles shop in Indiana) or ASE-certified technician.

Among those ASE-certified technicians are aftermarket mod shops like Roush, Saleen, Shelby and Hennessey. Those muscle mavens also offer their own supercharger packages — a market that Ford is keen to enter. Hennessey, for example, takes a Mustang GT or Dark Horse and converts it into a supercharged 850-horsepower/650-torque Super Venom hellion for $149,950 or $163,950, respectively.

“Ford Racing Parts is simplifying the path to high-output performance with turn-key installation of a new Supercharger Kit for all 2026 Ford F-150 and Mustang models equipped with the 5.0-liter V8 engine, providing a seamless way to deliver massive power with factory backing,” Ford said in a press release.

Aftermarket mod shops had not faced government fines like original equipment manufacturers and had been free to upgrade OEM engines after they had rolled off the assembly line. The Obama administration tried to eliminate aftermarket mods for track use in 2016, but the regulation was shut down after the Specialty Equipment Manufacturing Association, representing a $30 billion industry threatened by EPA’s mandate, led a grassroots protest against it.

While the Mustang’s eye-popping numbers will get headlines, the F-150 will get the volume. Ford has dabbled in special edition V-8 trucks in the past — think the 700-horsepower, 2023 Ford Performance 700 F-150 (equipped with similar supercharged V-8) or the off-road, 720-horse F-150 Raptor R monster, The Whipple package now opens thousands of V8-powered F-150 to dealer modification.

“The 2026 Ford F-150 Lobo street truck serves as the ideal vehicle for this upgrade, now allowing even higher output to match its aggressive stance,” Ford helpfully suggests.

Said analyst Brauer: “Aftermarket companies weren’t held up to mpg standards and have made a lot of money modifying muscle cars and trucks. Faced with the current political shift, automakers now no longer face those obstacles either.”

With one-stop shop, factory warranty andinstallation, and dealer delivery, Brauer said the Ford supercharger option will be very enticing to consumers.

“There will be fewer installation nightmares because this has been authorized by Ford engineers,” said the California-based analyst. “And it will likely be cheaper.”

Said Ford’s press releasee: “Engineered to Ford’s rigorous 100,000-mile durability standards, the kit ensures massive capability without sacrificing reliability. It is the ultimate expression of the Ford philosophy. By offering factory-backed, warranty-friendly performance upgrades from day one, Ford gives customers the power and peace of mind to take an already incredible vehicle and truly make it their own.”

Ford has built its performance marketing campaign around three icons: Mustang, F-series pickups and Raptor. Key to their market muscle is performance. F-series has led off 2026 with its V8-powered F-150 racing trucks dominating the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and the Mustang Challenge series (featuring the brand’s V8-powered Dark Horse R race cars) ramps up March 20 in Sebring, Florida. The V8-powered Raptor T1 off-road race car nearly won the famed Dakar Rally in January.

Dark Horse is the newest sub-brand to join the party.

While aftermarket shops like Shelby achieved notoriety by partnering with Mustang on high performance vehicles since the first-gen model in 1965, Ford has developed its own, in-house Dark Horse brand for the seventh-generation car. In addition to the 500-horse Dark Horse and Dark Horse R race car, Ford has developed the Dark Horse SC high-performance variant that effectively replaces the last generation Shelby Cobra GT500.

“You know what I think SC stands for?” Brauer said. “Shelby Clone.”
