Fire extinguished at multimillion-dollar home owned by Heat coach Spoelstra

MIAMI — A two-alarm fire broke out early Thursday morning at the home of Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, with firefighters battling the blaze for eight hours before extinguishing it at the five-bedroom home with a pool and tennis court in one of Miami-Dade’s priciest neighborhoods.
Videos show Spoelstra, holding his head, walking near the fire, which engulfed the 5,700-square-foot, 5-bedroom and 3 1/2-bathroom house behind a stone wall near Davis and Ponce de Leon roads, a slice of Miami-Dade County just west of Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables. The neighborhood has homes that sell in the tens of millions of dollars.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue told the Miami Herald that the call came in at 4:36 a.m. as a “structure fire at single-family residence.” Records show the house is at 4875 SW 80th St. Fire Rescue confirmed the blaze broke out at Spoelstra’s home.
“We found fire that was as tall as the trees,” said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Victoria Byrd.
It took Miami-Dade firefighters eight hours to extinguish the blaze, finally leaving the property around 12:40 p.m. When they left, they closed the gate and cordoned it off with red tape.
No one was injured in the fire, the agency said.
Throughout the morning, flames were still visible, black smoke choked the air and two structures were heavily damaged, with a partial collapse of one of the structures. Nearly 30 units were on the scene, according to the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s call log.
“Due to a partial collapse, units switched to a defensive attack, and are still working to extinguish the fire,” the agency said in an update in the morning.
Spoelstra and the Heat were returning on a chartered flight from Denver, where the team completed a four-game road trip with a loss to the Nuggets. The team landed at Miami International Airport at 5:11 a.m. Thursday, according to Flight Aware tracking data, about 35 minutes after firefighters were dispatched to Spoelstra’s home.
Last month, the Miami Heat posted a video on X showing a pre-season gathering at Spoelstra’s home. As a team-bonding event, Spoelstra hosted a family gathering with players, coaches and staffers ahead of the regular season.
The house was built in 1985, according to the Miami-Dade property appraiser. The home, which sits on a 43,000-square-foot lot, was sold to the Land Trust Agreement 4875 for $6.6 million in December 2023, Miami-Dade property records show. County records show there is an open permit on the property for roof work.
It remains unclear whether Spoelstra will coach the upcoming Heat games in the wake of Thursday’s devastating fire. In recent years for games Spoelstra was unavailable to coach, like for the birth of his children, associate head coach Chris Quinn has filled in as the Heat’s head coach. The Heat was off Thursday before hosting the Charlotte Hornets on Friday and Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday.
