Russell Westbrook posts triple-double in Kings' win over Warriors

Fans who bought tickets to Wednesday’s game expecting to see an All-Star cast featuring the likes of Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, Zach LaVine and Domantas Sabonis didn’t get exactly what they paid for.
What they got to witness instead was a vintage performance from Russell Westbrook.
Westbrook, the NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles with 204, recorded his first as a member of the Kings in a 121-116 victory over the Warriors before a sellout crowd of 17,832 at Golden1 Center in Sacramento.
Westbrook finished with 23 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists for the Kings (3-5), who have won two of their last three games after going 1-4 to start the season.
DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points for Sacramento in the first game of a five-game homestand. Malik Monk came off the bench to score 21 while Dennis Schroder added 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Will Richard scored 30 points to lead the Warriors (5-4). Moses Moody scored 28 points. Jonathan Kuminga had 24 points and nine rebounds.
Monk returned after missing two games due to personal reasons, but sides were shorthanded with a number of players out due to injuries and illness. The Kings were missing LaVine (back), Sabonis (ribs) and Keegan Murray (thumb). The Warriors were missing Curry (illness), Butler (back) and Green (rib).
Curry (11), Butler (6), Green (4), Sabonis (3) and LaVine (2) have combined to make a total of 26 All-Star appearances.
Both coaches talked about the challenge of preparing for the game as various players were ruled out over the course of the day.
“I get here pretty early in the morning and it was one thing, and then a little later it’s another thing, and later it was another thing and maybe not that thing, and now it’s this thing,” Christie said. “So, yeah, it’s been interesting, but the one thing that you know is they are extremely well coached. They play a beautiful brand of basketball, so that’s not going to change, and they have players, so it doesn’t matter who’s in the uniform. It’s going to be tough.”
Halftime report
Kuminga scored nine points over the first 5:30 to help the Warriors jump out to an early 21-11 lead. The Kings went 6 of 9 from the field to start the game, but they committed five turnovers over the first 6:29.
The Warriors went up by as many as 12 in the opening period and led 32-25 at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors went up by 13 early in the second quarter. The Kings came back to get within six on a few occasions before cutting the deficit to five on two free throws by Monk with 32.7 seconds remaining.
Golden State led 62-57 at the halftime break. Kuminga led all scorers with 17 points. Westbrook had 13 to lead the Kings.
Second-half summary
The Kings went up 67-66 early in the second half and led 92-85 at the end of the third quarter. Golden State went into the penalty with 7:17 to play in the third period and Sacramento took advantage.
The Warriors were whistled for 11 fouls in the third quarter, resulting in 18 free-throw attempts for the Kings. The Kings made 14 of 18 to pad their lead at the free-throw line.
Kuminga was the biggest culprit for Golden State, curtailing what could have been a big game. Kuminga picked up his fourth foul late in the third quarter and went to the bench after getting whistled for his fourth with 9:27 to play in the fourth.
The Kings went up by as many as nine before the Warriors came back to take a 103-102 lead on a 3-pointer by Richard with 6:44 remaining. The Kings responded with an 11-0 run to take a 115-104 lead when Schroder hit his third 3-pointer in a span of 2:07 to put Sacramento up 115-104 with 3:27 to go.
The Warriors cut the deficit to three on a 3-pointer by Podziemski with 57 seconds to play, but they couldn’t get any closer as chants of “Light the Beam” filled the arena in the final seconds.
Up next
The Kings will face the defending NBA champions for the second time in 11 days when they play host to the Oklahoma City Thunder in an NBA Cup game Friday at Golden 1 Center.
The Thunder (8-0) was the only undefeated team in the NBA going into Wednesday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Thunder handed the Kings a 107-101 loss on Oct. 28 in Oklahoma City. Reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 31 points in that game.
