Fever star Caitlin Clark ruled out vs. Liberty with groin injury

NEW YORK — Caitlin Clark’s face said it all.
Moments after she grabbed the inside of her right leg, the Indiana Fever superstar went to the bench in visible frustration in the final minute of Tuesday’s win over the Connecticut Sun in Boston.
And while the Fever had maintained the possibility that the 23-year-old sensation would be able to play in Wednesday night’s marquee matchup against the Liberty at Barclays Center, Clark was officially ruled out with a right groin injury about two hours before tip-off.
Wednesday’s absence continued an injury-plagued season for Clark, who missed five games from June 26 to July 5 with a left groin issue.
Tuesday’s game was Clark’s fourth since returning to the lineup last week.
Upon tweaking her groin with 39.3 seconds left in Tuesday’s win, an aggravated Clark walked to the basket, banged her head against its base, then placed a towel over her head in front of the Fever bench.
After the game, Fever coach Stephanie White said Clark “felt a little something in her groin” and would be evaluated that night and on Wednesday morning.
The Fever listed Clark as questionable in their pre-game status report Wednesday afternoon.
Clark also missed five games in May and June with a left quad injury. She returned from that ailment on June 14 against the Liberty in Indianapolis and erupted for 32 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to deal the defending WNBA champions their first loss.
But the sharp-shooting Clark has struggled from the field of late. In the four games after he returned from the left groin injury, Clark averaged 12.5 points on 34% shooting.
Over her last seven games, Clark is averaging 12.3 points per game and shooting 29.4% from the field, including 14.3% on 3-pointers.
Overall, the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game this season.
Wednesday’s game would have been Clark’s third of the season against the Liberty but her first at Barclays Center. She played two games in Brooklyn last year, including a three-point effort that remains the lowest-scoring game of her career.
The Liberty are set to host the Fever again on Tuesday following this weekend’s All-Star break.
