Max Fried keeps rolling as Yankees salvage series against Reds

Amidst the New York Yankees‘ recent struggles, one thing has remained the same.

They have a bona fide ace in Max Fried, and he continued to show it in the Bombers’ 7-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night to salvage the three-game set. Fried tossed seven innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out seven to record his 10th win of the season.

The southpaw lowered his season ERA to 1.92 as he can start packing his bags for Atlanta to join the 2025 All-Star Game.

The Yanks’ offense had two standout performers in Jasson Dominguez and Trent Grisham. The pair of outfielders both tallied four hits, two being doubles. Dominguez also added two stolen bases to his impressive stat line.

The Bombers saw just one ball leave the yard on Wednesday night as Jazz Chisholm Jr. remained scorching hot with a two-run homer — his 11th of the season — in the top of the third inning to give them an early 3-0 lead. Chisholm Jr. returned from an oblique injury on June 3, slashing .194/.313/.444. The infielder is now posting .242/.338/.466 and is one of their biggest contributors.

Fernando Cruz relieved Fried in the bottom of the eighth and struck out the side. Austin Wells added an insurance RBI single in the top of the ninth after Dominguez’s second double before JT Brubaker closed the door in their 7-1 victory.

The Yanks fended off the Tampa Bay Rays for another night as they sit just one game back of first place in the American League East.

Aaron Boone’s squad has the day off on Thursday before returning home to the Bronx to kick off a weekend set with the Athletics. Clarke Schmidt will take the ball Friday looking to continue his strong season — 2.84 ERA in 12 starts. Former Yankee farmhand Mitch Spence will toe the slab for the A’s.
