The National Hurricane Center began forecasting the potential a system could form off the Southeast coast of the United States this week.

In its 2 p.m. Eastern time tropical outlook Monday, NHC forecasters said a nontropical area of low pressure is expected to form in the next couple of days.

“If the system remains offshore, the low could gradually develop some subtropical or tropical characteristics later this week while moving northeastward at 10 to 15 mph,” forecasters said.

The NHC gives it a 10% chance to form into a tracked system in the next seven days.

If it were to grow into a named storm, it would take the name Andrea.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts the season to be above normal with 13 to 19 named storms.

The Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and runs through November 30.
