Sound Advice: A bargain-priced streaming device

Q. I have a Nebula Cosmos Max 4K projector that is several years old. It does not support Netflix unless you install some extra software, which I find cumbersome to use. I thought about upgrading to one of the other projectors you have written about, but some of them don't have built-in Netflix either. What do you recommend for around $1,000? The Nebula X1 you just wrote about looks great but is much more than I want to spend.

—J.F., Milwaukee

A. If you want to buy a new projector I think the Nebula Cosmos 4K SE would be the way to go. It lists for $1299.99, but is on sale for $999.99 right now. It was my product of the year award winner back in January for its high performance and value. seenebula.com

Don't forget you can upgrade an old television or projector to modern streaming capabilities by adding an external streaming device. Roku and the Amazon Fire Stick are two of the best known, but there is a new contender that the enthusiast community is raving about, and after trying one I have to say the buzz is well-deserved. Walmart has a house brand called Onn, and the Onn 4K Streaming Device is simply fantastic. It features the Google TV operating system and the implementation is practically perfect, with a very clean layout that makes it easy to navigate the menus. It has ample memory and a fast chip, which make it very responsive to remote inputs. The remote itself is finished in a stylish tone of white, which makes it easy to find when you misplace it. The Onn 4K Streaming Device sells for only $19.88, which has to be one of the best home entertainment bargains on the market today. I bought one to use with an old TV that did not have streaming at all, and I was delighted to the point it would be my price-independent choice if looking for a basic 4K streaming box. That the Onn 4K is one of the least expensive options on the market makes it that much sweeter. If you need high-end features like Dolby Atmos or Dolby Vision, Onn offers the 4K Pro for $49.88.

Please note that my recommendation only applies to the 4K models. I also bought the $14.88 1080P model to try and it is much slower than the 4K version. Even if you only have a 1080P TV, it is worth spending the extra $5 for the faster performance. It will also be future-proof if you upgrade to a 4K TV someday.

Even if you decide to buy a new projector, I think it is worth keeping your Cosmos Max in the game by adding an Onn 4K Streaming Device. The video performance might not be state-of-the-art these days, but it is still a fine performer. The same can be said for Panasonic plasma televisions. Even after you get a bigger and better new TV, you can add a streaming device and enjoy that classic and pleasing plasma picture in another room.

Q. I want to replace my excellent top-of-the-line LG TV with the newest LG EVO AI G5 55-inch. Can you tell me where I can buy one right now?

—R.G., South San Francisco, California

A. You can currently get them at lg.com. I've had excellent luck buying televisions direct from manufacturer websites, and if you ever need warranty service the records will already be in the system. You should start seeing them in brick-and-mortar retailers soon as well, but for now lg.com is a sure thing.
