Unhappy George Santos in solitary confinement after alleged death threat
Published in News & Features
Imprisoned former Congressman George Santos says he’s been placed into solitary confinement following an unspecific death threat at FCI Fairton in New Jersey.
The 37-year-old Republican is once again very unhappy about his living arrangements.
“I have been forced into solitary confinement while behind bars as the @FBI investigates a threat against my life,” Santos claimed on social media Tuesday morning.
Attached to his post was a handwritten note sent to the South Shore Press, for which the former New York lawmaker has been a columnist since surrendering to prison on July 25.
In his letter, Santos claims that on Aug. 18 he was “hauled” into an administrative building and informed by officials that, because people in prison wanted him dead, he was being sent to a special housing unit for his own protection.
“Well, here at FCI Fairton, they have a funny way of ‘protecting’ you,” Santos groused about the medium-security facility.
According to Santos, who’s serving a seven-year sentence on federal fraud charges, the unit where he was told he would spend 30 days while the alleged threats are investigated is used for both deterrence and “to torture people.”
Santos described his new abode as an “extremely dirty” 15-by-17-foot cell with a bed, toilet, sink and limited “ice-cold” shower access. Prison officials declined to address the disgraced politician's accommodations.
“For privacy, safety and security reasons, we do not discuss the conditions of confinement for any individual in our custody, including housing quarters,” the Federal Bureau of Prisons said in an email.
Santos also bemoaned prison conditions in a Sept. 1 essay for the South Shore Press, in which he claimed one administrator joked the facility could have marble floors and a jacuzzi, and the inmates would still complain.
“Personally, I find marble to be cheap, gaudy and tacky. But that’s beside the point,” Santos remarked, saying snide comments like the one he allegedly overheard undermine the real problems in the prison.
He now calls FCI Fairton “hell on earth” and hopes President Trump will commute his sentence. The White House has given no indication it will do so.
The FBI offered no further information on the alleged threat made against Santos, only referring the matter back to the BOP.
