Seattle Kraken keep point streak alive but fall in OT to Rangers
Published in Hockey
SEATTLE — Rangers 3, Kraken 2, OT at Climate Pledge Arena
Notable: Seattle pushed its point streak to four games (2-0-2) but dropped a second straight contest in overtime, this one to the New York Rangers.
Kraken blueliner Brandon Montour scored his third goal in two games to tie the game at 2, and according to NHL PR, his 96.40-mph slap shot was the fastest shot on goal yet this young season.
Teammate Kaapo Kakko returned from a broken hand, roughly a week ahead of schedule, in time to face the team that drafted him. The winger made his regular-season debut Saturday night, since the injury occurred in the preseason.
Kakko came to Seattle in a December trade after 5 1/2 seasons in New York. Defenseman Will Borgen, a Kraken extension draft selection and original member of the franchise, went to the Rangers in the deal. The organization thanked Borgen after a highlight reel on the Jumbotrons during the first period.
Kraken defenseman Ryan Lindgren spent nearly seven seasons with the Rangers before he was traded last March, then landed in Seattle as a free agent. Lindgren reportedly hosted many of his old teammates and Kakko last night for dinner.
Then it was back to work, where Kakko played 14:16 without incident and Lindgren gave his old teammates a late-second-period power play they didn’t score on.
Chandler Stephenson tied the game at 1 with a power-play tally. Seattle’s man advantage was in a four-way tie for 15th in the league (20%) heading into the game.
The Kraken have gone past regulation six times in their first 11 games and won two of the games. Only one has gone to a shootout, Oct. 16 in Ottawa. The Senators took that one.
Joey Daccord made his ninth start in 11 Kraken games and stopped 24 Rangers bids, none better than a sliding denial of J.T. Miller late in the third period.
Igor Shesterkin made 11 saves for New York (5-5-2). Vladislav Gavrikov and Noah Laba scored the Rangers’ regulation goals.
Quotable:“He’s so skilled out there. He’s a really talented offensive guy, and a good guy to have back in the lineup.” — Kraken winger Shane Wright on Kakko
Player of the game: New York’s Will Cuylle (OT winner, assist)
Goal of the game: Stephenson (one goal, one assist) swapped places with Matty Beniers and accepted a short pass from defenseman Vince Dunn. He then sent a flawless shot into the far, top corner of the net.
On tap: The Kraken (5-2-4) will welcome former winger Andre Burakovsky and the Chicago Blackhawks for the first time this season Monday. Chicago, which has been rebuilding since 2022, is off to an encouraging 5-4-3 start this season.
