Gambler pledges to donate winnings from $1M Super Bowl bet to cancer research

LAS VEGAS — There were no $1 million bets reported on last year’s Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. But there have already been three wagers of $1 million or more placed on Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots.
A bettor at Hard Rock Bet in Florida made the third seven-figure wager for $1 million on the Seahawks money line (-230) to win $434,782.61.
The first $1 million bet on Seattle was placed by Florida personal injury lawyer Dan Newlin, who has pledged to donate all of his winnings to support pediatric cancer research at Nemours Children’s Hospital.
“It’s a tough choice where I’m going to lay my $1 million wager. The game could go either way, but it’s just exciting to do something super cool that can inspire and shine a light on such an important cause like pediatric cancer research,” he said in a post on X (@NewlinLaw). “I rarely lose; I’ve spent my life winning, and I plan on winning this for the kids. They have absolutely nothing to worry about.”
Win or lose, Newlin said he will continue to donate to the Orlando, Fla.-based hospital’s research on pediatric cancer.
“Regardless of how this bet turns out, my contributions to Nemours won’t stop until a cure for pediatric cancer is found. If we don’t prevail, the kids and cancer research still win.”
Houston furniture store owner Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale made a $2 million bet to win $4 million on the AFC to win the Super Bowl at 2-1 odds at Caesars Sportsbook.
A bettor at Circa Sports wagered $1.1 million on the Patriots money line (+188) to win almost $2.1 million.
Hard Rock Bet doesn’t operate in Nevada.
