Nets outlast Mavericks 113-109 to earn 25th win of season

The Brooklyn Nets were blown out 120-101 when they faced the Dallas Mavericks last week at Barclays Center.
Two nights removed from snapping a six-game losing streak against the Washington Wizards, Brooklyn showcased better effort at both ends of the court in Monday’s rematch against Dallas American Airlines Center, and it survived 113-109 on the road and earned its second straight win.
A 3-point play by D’Angelo Russell gave the Nets a 108-107 lead with 1 minute 16 seconds left in regulation. Brooklyn got a stop at the other end, then Russell found Claxton off a screen-and-roll action. The veteran center finished at the rim through contact and completed the three-point play, which put Brooklyn up two possessions with 47.6 seconds left.
A 111-109 game with 9.1 seconds left, Dallas’ Klay Thompson and former Net Spencer Dinwiddie both missed what would’ve been go-ahead 3-pointers. Jalen Wilson then iced the game with a pair of made free throws with 0.3 seconds left — and that’s how the Nets snapped a six-game losing streak against Dallas.
While Brooklyn was outscored 56-36 in the paint, it made 20 3-pointers and dished out 32 assists.
The Nets improved to 25-51 and retained the sixth-best draft lottery odds with six games left. Until Monday, they hadn’t won consecutive games since February.
Keon Johnson finished with a game-high 24 points for Brooklyn with three rebounds and three assists in 29 minutes.
Jalen Wilson and Drew Timme, who both grew up in the Dallas area and had plenty of family and friends in attendance between the two of them, added 12 and nine points, respectively. They shot a combined 8 for 19 from the field.
“I think we met in the fourth grade,” Wilson said of his relationship with Timme. “I think Drew just showed up to the team randomly and we didn’t know who he was. But he was tall, and bro has just been cooking ever since. So, it’s been good. It’s been good. It’s been a long time coming for us all to be here at the same time, playing in Dallas is crazy.”
Daniel Gafford led six Mavericks in double figures with 17 points, seven rebounds and two assists in 19 minutes.
The Nets trailed Dallas 63-58 at halftime. They made 13 3-pointers in the first half between eight players, tied for the second most they’ve made in any half this season. They were efficient inside the arc as well, as they went 8 for 15 from two-point range. Ziaire Williams went 2 for 3 from deep in his first 14 minutes, and Russell 3 for 6 from deep in his first 17 minutes.
Brooklyn shot 9 for 16 from deep in the second quarter, tying its season high for 3s made in any quarter
Cam Johnson (lower back contusion), Noah Clowney (right ankle sprain) and Day’Ron Sharpe (right knee sprain) didn’t play.
Brooklyn will now turn its attention to Thursday’s matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves at Barclays Center. Its final road game of the season will be at Minnesota on April 11.
