CHICAGO — Lenyn Sosa entered his eighth inning at-bat against Tim Hill with the approach of “just stay calm.”

“My main thought was just to take advantage of a good pitch,” Sosa said through an interpreter, “and I was able to do that.”

Sosa hit a tiebreaking solo home run to center, helping to propel the Chicago White Sox to a 3-2 victory against the New York Yankees on Sunday in front of 27,810 at Rate Field.

“Very exciting, emotional to be able to hit a homer against a team like them in that situation,” Sosa said. “I’m very excited about it.”

The Sox relied on the long ball and strong pitching to snap a five-game losing streak.

Colson Montgomery tied the score in the sixth inning with a solo home run to right-center, his 15th of the season. Sosa broke the tie in the eighth with his team-leading 18th home run.

“You see teams like (the Yankees) and they have difference-makers and guys who put the ball in the seat,” Montgomery said. “We have guys who can do that, too. We’ve seen in the second half of the season we are putting the ball in the seats a lot more.

“They are momentum-changers and get the guys going. We’ve been doing that recently.”

Sox right fielder Mike Tauchman took a potential two-run home run away from Giancarlo Stanton in the third inning, leaping at the wall to make a catch. The defense aided starter Martín Pérez, who allowed two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

“It was a different lineup, made me work a little bit more,” Pérez said. “I missed my spot against (Aaron) Judge and he hit a (solo) homer (in the first inning). But we got the win and that’s most important for me.”

Manager Will Venable said Pérez was in “total control.”

“(He’s) pounding the strike zone,” Venable said. “It’s the north-south game, the east-west, attacking hitters. Just another great job.”

The Sox trailed 2-1 when Montgomery hit a long drive to right-center that bounced off the railing just above the wall for a game-tying solo home run.

“It has been kind of surreal to see what he has been doing,” Sosa said. “A lot of power, a lot of talent. That’s something that’s going to put us in a better position in the future.”

Sosa showcased his power in the eighth, hitting a 1-2 sinker for a 418-foot home run to give the Sox a 3-2 lead.

“He was ready to go, like he always is,” Venable said. “He’s dangerous up there every time, regardless of the matchup. He puts himself in a good spot. Got the lefty matchup there, which was great and put a good swing on a good pitch and was enough to get over.”

The Sox called on Mike Vasil with one on and no outs in the ninth to face the top of the Yankees’ order.

“I’ve talked about it with (pitching coach Ethan) Katz before, but any time you’re in that situation, especially against a team like that, you have to get ahead,” Vasil said. “They’re not going to expand, they’re going to make you earn it in the strike zone.

“So you’ve got to be able to get ahead, and then you have to really, really trust your stuff and know you can get them out with whatever you execute and just kind of go from there.”

Vasil got back-to-back flyouts to center from Paul Goldschmidt and Judge for the first two outs. He then struck out Cody Bellinger to end the game as the Sox (49-88) wrapped up a 10-game homestand on a positive note.

“Any win you can get, especially going into September and finishing strong is huge,” Vasil said. “You just want to win as many games as possible.”

Sox select Bryse Wilson’s contract from Charlotte

The Sox selected the contract of pitcher Bryse Wilson from Triple-A Charlotte after the Chicago Cubs claimed right-hander Aaron Civale off waivers on Sunday.

Wilson is 0-2 with a 6.95 ERA in 19 appearances (five starts) with the Sox. He was designated for assignment on June 10 and outrighted to Charlotte on June 14. Wilson is 4-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 14 games (seven starts) for the Knights.

Civale went 2-7 with a 5.37 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 13 starts with the Sox after being acquired from Milwaukee on June 13 for first baseman Andrew Vaughn.
