Tigers extend losing streak to six in loss to Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Detroit Tigers’ season-long losing streak hit six games Saturday night, as they were beaten for the second straight night by the Texas Rangers, 4-1, at Globe Life Field.
On Friday night, lefty Patrick Corbin put Tigers hitters in a vice. On Saturday, right-hander Kumar Rocker shut them down, allowing only one hit in 6 1/3 innings.
That one hit, a single by Wenceel Perez, came with two outs in the sixth. The Tigers didn't get on the board until Riley Greene led off the ninth with a solo home run to right, his 25th.
The six-game skid is the longest for the Tigers since they lost nine straight in June of 2023.
Rocker stymied the Tigers, primarily, with cutters and sinkers. He got eight whiffs on 28 swings with the cutter and eight called strikes with the sinker.
He also mixed in four-seamers, change-ups and sliders, the total package effectively keeping balls off the barrel. The 15 balls the Tigers put in play against Rocker had an average exit velocity of 82.6 mph. He got nine ground-ball outs.
The Tigers managed four hits Friday, all singles, and they had just two singles Saturday until Greene ambushed a first-pitch fastball from reliever Jacob Webb. This from a team that had at least one extra base hit in 38 straight games going into the break.
Tigers starter Keider Montero was his own worst enemy in this one. Three of the four runs against him came on one swing.
With two on and one out in the second inning, he fell behind lefty thumper Rowdy Tellez, 3-0. Tellez wasn't taking. He jumped all over a juicy fastball from Montero, sending it 432 feet into the Rangers’ bullpen in right-center field.
Montero lasted only 4 1/3 innings, with three walks and several long at-bats pushing his pitch count to 82.
A four-pitch walk to No. 9 hitter Alejandro Osuna in the fifth led to the Rangers’ fourth run, delivered by a Corey Seager single.
Things aren't going to get easier for the Tigers' hitters. They will face Rangers' ace Nathan Eovaldi in the finale Sunday night.
