Trump says his Miami presidential library tower will probably have a hotel, too

MIAMI — President Donald Trump’s presidential library tower in Miami will likely include a hotel and could have an office component, too, the president told reporters Tuesday.

“It’s gonna be most likely a hotel, you know? This concept could be office, but it’s most likely gonna be a hotel with a beautiful building underneath and a 747 Air Force One in the lobby,” Trump told reporters asking about what will fill the upper stories of the planned highrise.

The comments confirmed speculation that the massive skyscraper planned for Biscayne Boulevard was too tall to just house a presidential library and museum – even with a replica Air Force One in the lobby and a golden statue of Trump high above the seats in the auditorium.

By filling the upper floors with hotel rooms in an area of Miami where 1,049-foot towers are allowed, the Trump-controlled foundation behind the venture could generate significant dollars in a city that’s one of the top tourist destinations in the country.

Eric Trump, the son of the president helping plan the library tower, told the Miami Herald this week there would be no apartments or condominiums in the building.

This is the first public confirmation by Trump or his team that there are plans in the works for a commercial hotel linked to the project. It’s being built on prime downtown Miami property his nonprofit library foundation received at no cost from the state of Florida and Miami Dade College.

The state put few restrictions on how the Trump library foundation could use the land, only requiring that construction starts on a “presidential library, museum, and/or center within five years.”

“I think you’re gonna see a great one here and it’ll go up on time, on budget, best location in Miami,” Trump told reporters. “They say it’s the best block in Miami and the state worked with us.”

Trump already owns one of the largest hotels in Miami-Dade, the 643-room Trump National Doral Miami, which he bought out of bankruptcy four years before he won the 2016 presidential election.

The longtime real estate mogul described the planned legacy project as a “concept.”

“It’s a library, it’s a museum or a library. It’s presidential — but I wouldn’t start it until I’m out of office,” Trump said.

Tax filings show his foundation is planning to raise almost $1 billion dollars over the next three years to fund the vision, while he is still in office.
