WASHINGTON — New York City Comptroller Brad Lander is running for Congress, launching a Democratic primary challenge against Rep. Dan Goldman for a seat representing lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn.

“I’ve always believed that you fight for the things you love, and I love this city,” Lander said in an announcement video. “I love the streets where I walked my kids to school. The public schools that nurtured their curiosity, the fields in Prospect Park where I coached their Little League games. But most of all, I love the people that make this city what it is.”

“New Yorkers want Congress members who will step up and fight back against Trump and work with the mayor for a city that everyone can afford and where everyone is welcome,” Lander, an ally of New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, told the New York Times ahead of the formal announcement of his entry into the 10th District race.

Lander is launching his campaign with an array of high-profile progressive endorsements, led by Mamdani and Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., the Times reported.

“Brad Lander is a relentless fighter for working people. He’s spent the past two decades taking on big corporations, winning better wages and fair working conditions for New Yorkers, including major victories for fast food workers, delivery workers, and tenants,” Sanders said in a statement.

Lander, who also ran in the Democratic primary for mayor, aligned with and endorsed Mamdani.

“Our mayor can have an ally in Washington instead of an adversary in his own backyard,” Lander said in his video.

Lander’s entry will be a key test of the power of the progressive wing of the party in liberal districts. Goldman has the advantages of incumbency and significant personal wealth as an heir to the Levi Strauss fortune.

“He’s proud of his progressive record in Congress and will deal with Brad and other challengers in the new year,” Goldman spokeswoman Maddy Rosen told the Times.
