Wesley Bell proposes bill to allow for more civil rights, consumer lawsuits
Published in Political News
Saying it will give victims of racial discrimination "their day in court," U.S. Rep. Wesley Bell is one of several House members backing a bill that would allow for more discrimination suits to be filed.
The bill, introduced in late November, would give workers and consumers the ability to take race discrimination claims to court, rather than being required to agree to private arbitration proceedings.
In a statement, Bell said people facing discrimination "shouldn’t be pushed into a private process that was designed to protect corporations, not workers."
The bill would prohibit agreements that interfere with the right of individuals and small businesses to participate in lawsuits over a civil rights, employment, consumer or antitrust dispute.
A similar bill was proposed in September in the U.S. Senate by Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut. It now sits with the Senate Judiciary Committee.
