Do Just One Thing
It's a popular trend on Pinterest, but you should avoid painting, foiling and glittering pumpkins. They may look pretty, but when painted or adorned pumpkins biodegrade, all the remnants of what you used to decorate them also seep into the ground. Not only can these kinds of decorations make the pumpkin noncompostable, but they also can make it toxic to a wild animal that might swipe it from your front stoop. The solution? Don't paint pumpkins; but if you do, simply cut out the painted part and toss it in the trash, then put the unpainted part in the compost to naturally degrade.
