The Royal Ontario Museum was created by the signing of the Royal Ontario Museum Act in the Ontario Legislature in 1912. The Museum opened to the public on March 19, 1914, when the Duke of Connaught dedicated what now forms the back wing of the present building. The museum's collections comprise over 6 million science specimens and art and archaeology artifacts. Approximately 67,000 items are added each year. In 1998, a joint research team of museum staff and the Cuban Ministry of Science discovered the first almost perfectly preserved Taino house, approximately 400 to 700 years old, at an underwater site in Los Buchillones, Cuba. The discovery is unmatched in the West Indies.
