Why are people in general so discontent?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: When I watch riots and protest rallies on television and see the anger on the faces of the masses, it hits me so hard, and I feel hopeless for society. I try to protect my children from witnessing such lostness, but I know that this is part of life today. Why are people in general so discontent? – D.P.

A: Generations today are the most entertained in history. Large screen televisions with hundreds of channels. Devices with screens small enough to fit the palms of our hands that can access the World Wide Web with one tap. Professional sports teams that take in and spend billions of dollars. Music and movies that our ears and eyes feast on. Smartphones are seldom turned off.

This is a frantic search for something to constantly be filling the mind and is clearly a symptom of a deeper need. Some have suggested we are the most bored generation in history. Down inside is an empty place in our hearts – a restlessness, a search for inner peace – that just won’t go away. And the more we try to satisfy it with entertainment, the less content we become.

Only Jesus can fill that empty space in our hearts, and He will. As we open our lives to Him and humble ourselves in service to Him, the emptiness will melt away, and our minds and hearts will be filled with the goodness of God.

It is Satan’s purpose to steal the seed of truth from our hearts by sending distracting thoughts that can stir us up for the wrong things. Christ gives His followers strength and wisdom to make right choices and know the difference between what is good and what is evil.
