Why do human beings strive for something that will never come?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: It seems futile to hope for peace in this world. Things just get worse by the year. Why do human beings strive for something that will never come? – I.P.

A: There is a well-known story about Jim Elliott and four other missionaries who lost their lives to the fierce Auca people of Ecuador. The missionaries had befriended these warriors, hoping to present the Gospel to them, because the missionaries knew the only way to stop the killing was for the Aucas to come to Jesus.

Less than two years after Jim Elliott’s death, his wife and daughter and the sister of one of the other missionaries went to live with the Aucas. Many became Christians, and peace was brought to the Auca tribe.

Conflict still exists on Earth among nations, communities, and families. Organizations have been created, much money and time have been spent, treaties have been signed, books have been written, but no human formula has been found to bring peace on Earth. So we ask, “What can be done?”

People are searching for peace within themselves, or hoping that peace can come through someone who has attained a great following. But the only solution to finding true peace is through God’s offer – His Son, Jesus. He is the only One who can end conflict by changing our hearts and giving us His peace and love for others. Jesus “Himself is our peace” (Ephesians 2:14, NKJV).

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace” (John 16:33, NKJV). Only Christ can meet the deepest needs of our world and our hearts. Christ alone can bring lasting peace – peace with God, peace among mankind, and peace to the nations.
