Five Night's at Freddy's 2 director Emma Tammi has said the reunion between Scream stars Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich felt like a "serendipitous happening".

The upcoming horror sequel will reunite Lillard, 55, and Ulrich, also 55, after the pair starred as the Ghostface killers in the original 1996 Scream, and Tammi has now teased it "wasn't a coincidence" the two actors are working together again on Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

Speaking with Collider, the 43-year-old director said: "It wasn't a coincidence, but it felt like, still, a serendipitous happening.

"I'm, like, pinching myself even thinking that this is what we're talking about. But Skeet's name was brought up when we were talking about one of the new characters in the film, and, of course, we went to Matt right away and asked how he felt about Skeet as a potential bud in the franchise.

"Of course, he was just gushing over him in every way, personally, professionally, and also got very excited about the idea of this reunion of sorts.

"It just worked. It worked out, and we're so lucky to have them, both of them."

Lillard will be reprising his role as William Afton in Five Nights at Freddy's 2, while Ulrich will portray Afton's Fazbear Entertainment co-founder - Henry Emily.

Tammi teased Five Nights at Freddy's 2 would include some "tie-ins" to the Scream franchise.

She said: "I think thematically there are some tie-ins that feel like a nod to Scream without us even needing to go there."

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 - which hits cinemas on December 5, 2025 - picks up one year after the events of the first film, and follows former Fazbear Entertainment security guard Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson) as he tries to protect his young sister Abby (Piper Rubio) from the terrifying truth of the pizzeria.

However, after Abby sneaks out to reconnect with her animatronic friends Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy, the pair soon discover the sinister origins of the pizzeria.

Five Night's at Freddy's 2 will also star Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa Shelly, Freddy Carter as Jeremy Fitzgerald and Megan Fox as Toy Chica.

Tammi said Five Nights at Freddy's 2 was "chock-full of Easter eggs" that even big fans of the original video game franchise - which was created by developer Scott Cawthon - might miss.

She noted: "I do think the big tease is the animatronics - all the ones they're expecting, maybe some more - and just chock-full of Easter eggs again.

"We've really done our best to include as many details and things as possible that fans are going to pick out from the game, that they're going to appreciate from the lore. It's just really packed.

"Now, you might not get all those references if you're not a diehard fan, but I think the story still is really a fun ride, and I think you can follow it and enjoy it, even if you don't understand all the layers."

Reflecting on the future of the franchise, Tammi said she hopes a third Five Nights at Freddy's movie will be made.

She shared: "I think we're in the same place where we were when movie one came out in terms of the sequel, which was, we're really hoping that everyone embraces this one.

"If they do, we'd love to keep making more. But we're still taking it one step at a time."
