Travel experts predict next filming location for HBO's 'White Lotus'
Published in Entertainment News
No spoilers for "The White Lotus" here but, if you have been inspired to travel to Thailand after watching HBO’s riveting depiction of the island of Koh Samui during Season 3 and want to know where the show might go for Season 4, you've come to the right place.
Of course the hub of "The White Lotus" Season 3 was the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, but several other properties in popular Thai destinations made cameo appearances throughout the season.
This included the Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort, which stood in for the White Lotus resort’s bar. The property is on the northeast coast of the island near the famed Chaweng Beach.
The Thai island of Phuket was also featured prominently in the show and the Rosewood Phuket’s Ta Khai restaurant was used as the hotel restaurant. The spa was also located on Phuket at the Anantara Mai Khao Phuket.
Season 4 has already been greenlit, and viewers are speculating on where the next “White Lotus hotel” will be. Could we be headed to somewhere even more far flung than Southeast Asia? The Serengeti, perhaps or French Polynesia? Or will the show stay closer to home — the shores of a secluded Mexican resort or maybe the jungles of Costa Rica?
What we do know is that it will be a warm destination (creator, writer and executive producer Mike White famously doesn’t like the cold) and it will be a Four Seasons due to the show’s ongoing partnership with the resort brand.
The rest is anyone’s guess.
If you ask us — and to be upfront, no one has — the seasoned TravelPulse editorial staff and executives from Northstar (parent company of TravelPulse) offer our best guesses for destinations we see rising to the top of the list:
—TravelPulse Editor in Chief Eric Bowman:
“My gut says they will keep it closer to home for Season 4 after such a lengthy experience shooting in Thailand for Season 3. However, they haven’t been to Africa yet, so I’ll toss one out for that region because a safari has so much potential wild antics.”
His predictions: Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica, Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo, México, Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, Tanzania.
—TravelPulse Senior Editor Patrick Clarke:
“I predict Season 4 of The White Lotus will take place on one of the new Four Seasons yachts as each previous season has featured some pretty epic scenes at sea. The first three seasons have scoured the globe, so it only seems right that Mike White would pivot to a season with no set destination.”
—TravelPulse Managing Editor Janeen Christoff:
“I agree with Pat here. Who wouldn’t want to see Four Seasons’ newly minted Captain Kate McCue make her White Lotus debut?
“However, Four Seasons offers many amazing options. I think that they will keep it closer to home this year. My bets are on the stunning Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita in Mexico or perhaps the Four Seasons Resort Nevis in the West Indies (after all, the resort just broke ground on some fancy new residences).
“If the show does go farther afield, I envision the beautiful Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, which really gives off White Lotus vibes.”
—Northstar Retail Travel Group Director of Marketing Melissa Cooper:
Could The White Lotus buck all the trends and head to the Alps? Northstar Travel Group's Melissa Cooper thinks so.
"I know Mike White said warm destinations only … but we also know he loves a plot twist, so maybe he’s trying to throw us off base. In which case … I’d love to see the next White Lotus head to Gstaad, Switzerland! Four Seasons is set to take over the iconic Park Gstaad Hotel, and think of the possibilities of having White Lotus guest antics in a beautiful, luxe, après ski environment."
—Northstar Travel Group Vice President and Editorial Director Kenneth Shapiro:
"I’m going to take an underdog bet: Middle East/North Africa. Either Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, or possibly Casablanca, Morocco. I think this region offers a sense of mystery, a link to history and the opportunity to explore bigger existential questions, which are hallmarks of the show. And they have beautiful luxury resorts."
