MINNEAPOLIS — An online fundraising campaign on behalf of the family of Alex Pretti, who was fatally shot in Minneapolis during a confrontation with federal immigration officers on Jan. 24, has raised more than $1.6 million and drew a big donation from an activist investor who gave to a fundraising effort for the officer who killed Renee Good three weeks ago.
Hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who has challenged management over the years at large companies, including Minneapolis-based Target, gave $10,000 to the GoFundMe account started on behalf of Pretti’s father, Michael Pretti.
Ackman gave the same amount to the GoFundMe effort for Ross, explaining on X that “I am big believer in our legal (principle) that one is innocent until proven guilty.”
He added that he wanted to “similarly support the GoFundMe for Renee Good’s family. (However) her GoFundMe was closed by the time I attempted to provide support.”
There had been roughly 40,000 donations made to the Pretti fundraiser as of late afternoon on Jan. 27.
The Good campaign collected nearly $1.5 million on more than 38,000 donations. The top contribution was one for $50,000 that was made anonymously.
The Ross fundraiser has more than $790,000 in donations thanks to more than 16,700 donations.
