Death after Montgomery County police encounter under investigation by Maryland attorney general

BALTIMORE — The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division announced Friday that it is investigating an individual’s death after police released him from custody earlier this month.
Montgomery County police took the yet-unnamed decedent into custody while responding to a 911 call for a person experiencing a mental health crisis on the night of Dec. 15, according to a news release from the attorney general’s office. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service transported the man to a local hospital for an emergency evaluation.
About two hours after being admitted to the hospital, he suffered an unspecified medical crisis and died Dec. 22, investigators said.
The attorney general’s office did not further specify the medical crisis when contacted by The Baltimore Sun on Friday. Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to contact the Independent Investigations Division at 410-576-7070 or by email at IID@oag.state.md.us.
The Independent Investigations Division is tasked with investigating all police-involved deaths or incidents in which police actions cause injuries that are likely to result in death.
The division typically releases the names of the decedent and the officers involved in its investigations within two business days, and body-worn camera footage within 20 business days of the death or grievous injury. That timeline can sometimes be extended.
