NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A police officer is placed on administrative leave after shooting a person after a struggle over a gun, according to a news release.

At about 3:15 a.m. on Saturday, officers responded to call about an officer involved shooting in the 600 block of 79th street. This is off of Jefferson Avenue in Newport News.

According to the results of a preliminary investigation, a vehicle pulled up to an officer and the driver asked the officer for help regarding a confrontation that happened inside the vehicle. The officer saw a gun in the vehicle and then struggled with a person in the car over the gun. Then, the officer stepped back to create distance, the person then exited the vehicle and pointed the gun at the officer. The officer then shot the person with his own firearm.

Other officers arrived on scene and provided aid until medics arrived and the person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured.
