WASHINGTON — Catherine Szpindor, the chief administrative officer for the House since 2021, will step down from her post at the end of this year.
Szpindor’s resignation was read during a pro forma session on Tuesday. She will be replaced on an interim basis by Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Anne Binsted.
“It has been a great pleasure to serve this institution and lead an organization that is dedicated to serving the members,” Szpindor wrote in a statement that was read from the House floor.
The CAO is a nonpartisan House office tasked with providing day-to-day technical, administrative and operational support to member offices.
Szpindor came to the House in 2011 as director of enterprise applications, then became deputy chief information officer. From 2015 to 2020 she was the House’s acting chief information officer, where she worked on improving technology infrastructure and led the implementation of collaboration and conferencing tools to support remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Catherine’s stewardship of the House of Representatives on behalf of the American people has been nothing short of exemplary,” Rep. Joseph D. Morelle, D-N.Y., ranking member on the House Administration Committee, said in a statement. “Her steady hand guided the House through many challenging times. I’m deeply grateful to Catherine for her leadership and dedication to making the People’s House a better institution.”
Before coming to the Hill, Szpindor was vice president of IT at Thomas Nelson Community College, now known as Virginia Peninsula Community College, in Virginia and worked in IT for companies including Sprint and Nextel.
In January 2021, then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., appointed Szpindor to the role, making her the first woman to hold the job and the ninth CAO since the office was created in the 104th Congress.
Binsted has worked in the House for more than three decades, including stints on several House committees and in the office of House Minority Leader Robert H. Michel, according to the CAO website.
In her time at CAO she’s managed the human resources department, the House child care center, media galleries, the Office of Employee Advocacy and the CAO’s congressional transition work.
