Auto review: 2025 Mercedes G-Wagon goes electric with G580

In 2025, Mercedes electrified its flagship G-Wagon, and the G580 EQ was born.

As a lover of boxy exterior styling on modern SUVs, in my opinion the G-Wagon has few peers, such as the Land Rover Defender. I'm not alone in my enthusiasm for this shape, judging from the demand for boxy entry-level SUVs such as the Honda Element and Dodge Nitro.

Styling aside, the G-Wagon is commendable also for its off-roading ability and history of exceptional reliability.

Now electrified as the G580 — a reference to its 579 horsepower — this SUV is as torquey as can be at over 850 pound-feet. It's a dream luxury cruiser that has no problem pinning you to the seat and getting out of the way quickly and smoothly.

As you float in this almost 7,000-pound tank on wheels, the appeal of the interior is evidence that Mercedes-Benz remains at the top of its game. Standard interior options on the G580 include Burmester 3D surround sound audio, comfort package, keyless start, multicolor ambient lighting and power sunroof, while all-wheel drive, low range gearbox, torque vectoring and a 200 kW DC fast charging system is also standard.

Upgrades on our G580 tester were a dark blue nonmetallic exterior paint, black panel radiator grille, a black logo package, leather grab handles, a night package and an interior plus package. At a base price of $161,000, to say that the G580 is luxury on wheels is an understatement.

Its electric engine delivers nicely for those local travelers looking to make a statement while enjoying their everyday ride around town. It has great interior comfort and storage space, and that beautiful exterior shape that will always appeal.
